Oscar-Nominated Movies that Coaches on Effective Money Lessons

Movies are primarily viewed as a tool to evoke faith in life and humanity. The subjects of the movies are often seen imparting life lessons, yet there is nearly no messaging on one thing that practically governs our life: MONEY. However, time and again, a film comes along that imparts actual money management, finance, and business advice — even if just as a side effect of the main plot.

Some movies in the history of the Oscar nomination list can be legit coaches to our Effective Money Lessons.

Some Famous Oscar-Nominated Movies that Teach Money

The Big Short (2016)

  • The Big Short is one of the most dramatic financial events, recounting the 2007-2008 financial crisis from the perspective of people who bet on the housing market collapse. This film is based on famous author Michael Lewis' book ‘Inside the Doomsday Machine. The film was well-received due to the presence of Christian Bale and Steve Carrell.

The film time and again reminds us that, ‘Every bubble will burst’.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2014)

  • One of the most talked-about, Leonardo DiCaprio, starred, in The Wolf of Wall Street, based on Jordan Belfort's memoirs, which tell stories of his rise and collapse as a Wall Street tycoon.

It chalks out one lesson about money and finance: ‘Stock recommendations taken from strangers can look appealing but are not always best suited for an individual.’

Moneyball (2012)

  • Another flick is based on the writings of author Micheal Lewis. He introduced the world to the architect of that baseball revolution, Billy Beane, in his book Moneyball: The Art of Winning. Beane, played by Brad Pitt in the 2011 film Moneyball, finds a method to overcome his team's minimal budget and compete with the league's deep-pocketed organisations such as the New York Yankees.

The movie talks about the lesson, ‘Value investing can also be a profitable strategy for your portfolio.

The Social Network (2011)

  • This dramatisation of Facebook's early days, written by Aaron Sorkin, follows co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg as he attempts to alter the way people communicate online. The young programmer has been hounded by charges of intellectual property theft from the Winklevoss twins, two of his former Harvard classmates. Yet, despite these allegations, Facebook continues to multiply.

The takeaway lesson for this flick is: ‘Idea sharing takes you afar from the Execution. So just Act on Them!’

Some Legendary Oscar-Nominated Movies that Teach Money

The Godfather (1972, 1974, 1990)

  • Vito Corleone states, “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse.” This classic statement comes from the Godfather trilogy, widely heeded by filmmakers. It implies money talks. Other takeaways from this film include a firm position in decision-making and understanding the value of objects for which a high price may be required.

Trading Places (1983)

  • A high-powered businessman is a criminal in this early 1980s comedy classic, while a street hustler is transformed into a genuine businessman. Isn't that a clever title? It's fascinating to see how each character interacts with their dilemma, and it infers the jailed thought of how to deal with uncertainty. One of the essential principles that can be learned from this saying is to look after and constantly think about your finances first, without compromising the well-being of others.

Shawshank Redemption (1994)

  • This critically praised film about a falsely accused New England banker contains several important messages. Due to its commitment to a perfectly rehearsed escape plot and his willingness to persevere, Dufresne escapes from prison. His commitment exemplifies the effort required to prepare one's long-term financial future adequately. This film also shows that no one can predict where life will lead. Take the good with the bad and adapt as needed.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

  • This cult classic depicts the insanity with which individuals often view money, as evident by their actions and words. The characters in the film, ranging from those with keys to the city to unemployed amateur bowlers, demonstrate the importance of being resourceful to achieve one's goals. In a depressed economy, finding new solutions to tackle problems is significant.
